Aoi Matsuri Festival in Kyoto

Colorful graphical illuminations were projected on the wide stairs of Kyoto station to celebrate the Aoi Matsuri Festival on May 15.

On the day of May 15, I saw the festival for the first time from the Kyoto Gyoen seating area. The center of the festival was a princess (Saio-Dai) seated in a palanquin carried on men’s shoulders. However, there was some distance to the palanquin, and its roof was too low to watch the princess very closely. Instead, it was impressive that girls (Warawame) who walked around the palanquin were appealing to the audience.
